1. Yesterday I received an email announcing that, after their March/April issues goes live, Lonny Magazine will begin publishing MONTHLY! I was so excited about this news and can't wait for some Lonny goodness each month.
2. Design Manifest posted an Ikea hack yesterday and I confess that this is the first Ikea hack I am %100 on board with. I feel that almost all Ikea hacks look pretty cheap even after they have been made over, but Naomi's vinyl ottoman for her boyfriend looks really nice, durable and stylish. Great job!

Book Review: Allegra Hicks
I have been impatiently awating the arrival of Allegra Hicks: An Eye for Design. Most people fall in love with the cover alone, which is eye-catching and interesting, but the contents are also visually stimulating and the words, actually, thought provoking.
On first glance I was almost disappointed to see page after page of few words and many pictures which were not of interiors, which I was expecting. HOWEVER, I began reading the introduction of the book and that is where Allegra Hicks explains her upbringing and how that affected her eye for design. She also speaks of how she finds beauty and inspiration through nature, fabric, culture, etc. Through her explanation of seeking design inspiration, her selection of images and minimal wording not only makes sense, but allows you to understand how and why she sees what she does.
The images are vibrant and the message of the book is beautiful and this book steers in a different direction from a couple of my other favorites that focus on the how to of interiors alone.
And yes, the cover is fun and beautiful.
"This idea of art and life being fused harmoniously together has shaped my work. I let designs evolve out of pleasure, out of seeing something that I find inspiring and beautiful."
"I feel that they way one can put all these thoughts together in the most inspiring and concrete way of all is in interiors. A room can define an era as much as the clothes worn in it or those who inhabit it. A harmoniously decorated room embodies the spirit of its owners and creators, like a self portrait. A very well-designed room evokes and involves all the sense, from the visual to the physical. And the scent of a room can be as powerful as its colors and shapes. . . A color, a texture, or a pattern can become very personal, like a Proustian key to a place in one's memory. And the places we have chosen to put together in this book are all touchstones of this kind for me. I can effortlessly see them with my inner eye. They are my constant companions, my inspirations, and are crucial to my work as a designer."
"I observe everything that is part of our everyday life, searching for the essence of these things. I still work in this way. Out of the observation of the world, there emerges an abstraction, a pattern, which finds its own life once I remove it from its original context."
"As a small child, my parents taught me to look at things. Not just to see the world around me, but to be conscious understanding it. In other words they taught me how to appreciate beauty."

"Really good designers have no inhibitions about the depth of pleasure that taste can give both to them and to others."

Inexpensive Art on Etsy
I love what a piece of art can do to a room. Adding color, texture and interest to an other wise flat and boring room is the beauty of art. I am working on a large piece of art for our living room and can't wait to show you and to stare at it all day long.
Designing on a budget is necessary at the moment so I decided to share with you my most favorite inexpensive art options I've found on Etsy over the last little while and wouldn't mine purchasing if our apartment had more wall space and if we didn't have other needs. . . like eating and law school tuition.
Sidenote: I know gallery walls are a big thing and have been for a while, but I have mixed feelings about them. I like them on a larger scale and I do think they look better in certain styles of design, but every person has their own preference.

A Break from the Usual for some Hilariousness. . .
I posted a little late yesterday because I was downtown at a baby appointment which shouldn't have taken all day, but the weather was insanely warm and Michigan Avenue was calling my name. I totally believe retail therapy is a real thing and every once in a while I like to partake in it.
I came home late and as I went through my daily blog reads I stumbled upon this gem. I am a Kristen Bell fan because of that cheesy awesome movie 'When In Rome' that she was fantastic in and this video only makes me love her more. I was literally in tears laughing so hard. Please enjoy this and tomorrow I we will be back to our regular programing.

Details: Finishing a Room
You can stuff a room with furniture and arrange it in the perfect layout and yet still have a room that feels incomplete. It comes down to the little details and accessories one fills their room with that really tie everything together. My problem I always battle with is spending money on accessories that have no meaning to me and are just for show. I don't like a room to be a show room, which is why my rooms always feel half done. I add accessories as I need them or find meaning in them. Function AND style please!
It was in this post that I mentioned my vague plans for completing mine and my husband's bedroom by adding the finishing touches. Once I repaint our nightstands I can bring in the color and personality.
Here are few details you can add to complete a room and while personalizing it to you. All of these can run a bit pricey, but can also be done on the cheap and given the old DIY.

1. Artwork- Hanging or leaning
2. Books- For browsing or reading
3. Boxes, fresh flowers and trays
4. Lamps- Colored bases or colored shades
5. Mirrors- Ornate or simple
6. Pillows- My favorite, easy to change with so much color!

Color Combo: Pink & Red
Welcome to a new week! Mine is starting out windy (typical Chicago), but also sunny. Yesterday I was able to get together with some friends of ours to have a Pre-Valentines Day dinner. It was delicious and fun to be with friends while enjoying a little pink and red. I know February is still a couple days away, but I thought I would pull some pink and red rooms together to get you in the mood.
Are you trying to get into the lover's day mood?
